The Haskells were completed from 1944 to 1945. They were Victory Ships (VC2-S-AP5) converted to troop transport duty. They carried 2 LCM(3), 21-22 LCVPs, 1-2 LCP(L), and 1 LCP(R) to get the troops ashore. Built to high standards and in large numbers, they constituted the majority of the Navy's attack transport fleet clear into the 1960s.

The ships cost about $4.5 million apiece.
