The Andromedas were
completed in 1943-45. They were Maritime Commission
standard C2-S-B1 hulls
armed and manned by Navy crews for landing cargo on the beach during
amphibious
assaults. They carried 1 LCP(L),
8 LCM(3), and
15-16 LCVP
landing craft for transporting their cargoes ashore. They were equipped
with a 12,000 gallon (45,000 liter) per day distilling plant and with 4
35-ton, 2 10-ton, and 4 5-ton booms.
